Medal box. Johan Werner Gericke (1746-1801) Middelburg 1784, gold, diamonds. With the conclusion of the peace treaty of 1784, the French vice-admiral Pierre Andre de Suffren de Saint-Tropez was honoured as a hero by France and the Netherlands. The Dutch East India Company (VOC) presented him with this box containing a gold medal. Thanks to De Suffren, the Dutch colonies in Africa and Asia had not fallen into British hands.
