To deal with food shortages during the war, the Ministry of Food began a system of rationing. People had to register at chosen shops, and had a ration book containing coupons. Rationed items included meat, dairy produce, tea and sugar. Rationing continued after the war – and bread was not rationed until after the war ended. A 'national loaf' of wholemeal bread replaced the ordinary white variety.
