Markham Main Colliery, Doncaster, South Yorkshire, 1956. This photograph shows the upcast ascent gear at Markham main colliery in Armthorpe, near Doncaster, during refurbishment work in 1956. During the Miners' Strike in the early 1980s, there were violent clashes between strikers and police and the 'Battle of Markham Main' is a reminder of more unsettled times. The site became home to a smart new housing development after the pit closed in 1996.
