London, UK. 16 June 2023. A staff member presents Sir Ernst Chain’s 1945 Nobel Prize medal in Physiology or Medicine (Est. £300,000-500,000) at a preview of Bonhams Fine Books and Manuscripts sale. While Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin in 1928, Howard Florey and Ernst Chain worked to make penicillin into a manufacturable bacteria-killing drug and all three were awarded the Nobel Prize.
