Late 1950s, historical picture of the construction of the giant Durgapur Steel Plant, Durgapur, West Bengal, India, After independence, the steel plant was one of the first major construction projects in India and in 1957 an indian company, Patel Engineering, in collaboration with a British business, Cementation UK, undertook the entire civil engineering and ground works. The massive indusrtrial complex involved building and machinery foundations, concrete piles, building structure, railway tracks, roads and other serivces such as drainage and a water supply. The plant was finished in 1959.
