Colorful buildings visible through a portal in King John's Castle in the town of Kilmallock, County Limerick, Ireland. The castle and portal exist on a four-story tower that was built in the 15th or 16th century, hundreds of years after King John's death in 1216. It is an example of a tower house or late medieval fortified residence and the only surviving example in Kilmallock. Kilmallock is considered an important Norman town that was at the core of Ireland's political development from the 13th through to the 17th centuries
