Kilauea eruption of May 1924. This eruption and associated ash plume is from the Halemaumau Crater, viewed from the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO). The ash cloud is 3500 metres high and rising at the rate of 4 metres per second. Observing in the foreground are geologists H. Palmer and John Stokes. Kilauea is the most active of the volcanoes on Hawaii. Photographed by Harold Thornton Stearns at 08:18 local time on 22 May 1924.
