Staffel, Kampfgeschwader 30: Probably taken in the Barent’s Sea, it is thought that this dramatic photograph records the sinking of a merchantman on the Murmansk Run, hit by Willi Erken’s crew from 5./KG 30 on 5th July 1942 while flying Junkers Ju 88 4D+FN. Will Hoffmann was the Air Gunner on board. The date coincides with a day of devastating attacks on Allied convoy PQ17 and this photograph may record the end of MV Peter Kerr, sunk on this day.
