Holocaust survivor Ivan Shaw at his home in north London, ahead of Holocaust Memorial Day. Ivan was born in 1939 in Novi Sad, Yugoslavia (now Serbia). In 1944 Germans began to round up and deport Jews, including Ivan's mother. His father went with her despite only being half-Jewish. Ivan was hidden by one of his father's sisters until his concealment was given away by a neighbour. He was then taken to prison by the Gestapo, spending the night alone in a cell aged 5, before he was moved to a transit camp where he was reunited with his family. The inmates were taken to Novi Sad train station to be moved to another camp, but Ivan was rescued by one of his aunts who hid him for the rest of the war. Ivan's parents died in the camps.
