Harry Lauder (1870-1950), Scottish music hall entertainer, pictured with a pipe he had organised, with the sanction of the War Office, to tour Scotland and the North of England and stimulate recruitment during the First World War. His appeal was as follows: 'I want 1000 men. Our country calls for the best that is in us. Anything we can do let us do it voluntarily and without force. Don't let the spirits of the glorious past laugh us to disaster.' Date: 1915
