Giants Causeway Northern IrelandMore information:
Whilst on a cruise to Iceland we stopped in Northern Ireland and took an excursion to the Giants Causeway. Said to be formed by volcanic eruptions some 60 million years ago forcing tectonic plates to stretch and break forming a lava plateau. Rapid cooling is said to have occurred forming hexagonal basalt columns. It was fascinating to be able to walk on these stones but be warned they are slippery from the sea and there is a small climb to gain access to a top section when the tide is in but well worth it. The area is huge, said to be some 173 acres of hexagonal basalt columns.
