France, Fougeres. Originally there were four gates but only this one the Notre Dame gate is still standing. The castle first built in the 11th century is one of the best preserved castle in Europe. It was a military stronghold of prime importance on the Breton Marchlands. The walls and eleven towers of the fortress enclose an area of 2 hectares. They were built to protect the inhabitants.
