The East India Company, which became the British East India Company after the 1707 Treaty of Union, was an early English joint-stock company that was formed initially for pursuing trade with the East Indies, but that ended up trading mainly with the Indian subcontinent and China. The Company was granted an English Royal Charter by Queen Elizabeth I on 31 December 1600. After a rival English company challenged its monopoly in the late 17th century, the two companies were merged in 1708.

It was the London town house of the Bishop of Durham and its gardens descended to the River Thames. Anne Boleyn lived in Durham House in 1532 while Henry VIII courted her prior to their marriage in 1533. Henry granted Durham House to his daughter Lady Elizabeth (later queen). Upon her accession, Elizabeth kept possession of the residence until 1583, when she granted it to Sir Walter Raleigh.

The main part of the house was demolished in the 1670s. Essex Street was built on part of the site.

In 1539, Edward Seymour, 1st Earl of Hertford obtained a grant of land here. When his nephew King Edward VI became king in 1547, Seymour became Duke of Somerset and Lord Protector. He built a palatial residence, one of the first English Renaissance homes. Somerset was executed in 1552. Somerset Place came into the possession of the Crown. The future Queen Elizabeth I, lived there in the 1550s. The original Somerset House was demolished in 1775.
