Mother, Father and child living in the basement of a school south of Grozny. The school and village had been shelled by Russian Artillery during the first Chechen war (1994-1995). According to the Russian military, 5, 732 soldiers died during the first Chechen war and it has been estimated that civilian deaths were between 30, 000 and 100, 000, with half a million displaced. A Russian air and artillery assault that began on New Year’s Eve in 1994 is said to be the heaviest bombing campaign in Europe since the destruction of Dresden Germany during WWII.
