First Chechen War, November 1994. Civilians look at a destroyed Russian T-72 tank on the street in Grozny, Chechnya. One of the estimated 23 Russian military battle tanks that were destroyed by the Chechen National Guard during the Battle of Grozny. The November 1994 battle, a failed covert attempt by Russian Intelligence services to overthrow the independent Dzhokhar Dudayev Chechen government, resulted in up to 500 civilian and military casualties, 50 Russian soldiers taken prisoner and the loss of Russian ground military equipment and combat aircraft.
