--FILE--A customer shops for Fisher-Price toys of Mattel at a store in Shanghai, China, 9 November 2011. Mattel Inc. said it is looking into allegations by a labor rights group that the toy maker is violating Chinas labor laws and abusing workers. A spokesman for Mattel, the maker of Barbie dolls and Hot Wheel toy cars, said Wednesday (16 October 2013) the company takes the welfare of the people who make our products very seriously and that the company will take necessary action following the investigations completion. China Labor Watch, a New York-based advocacy group, alleged Tuesday that workers are being underpaid and overworked at six Chinese factories that make Mattel toys with a workforce of 20, 000. California-based Mattel, which is the worlds largest toy company, operates its own factories and contracts to third-party vendors in China. The reports allegations included both vendor and Mattel-owned factories. Mattel owns four factories in China, and also works with around 30 to 40 vendors in the country, based on seasonality, product assortment and other factors.
