False black widow or Cupboard spider (Steatoda grossa) on a shed wall near Wells, Somerset, UK. NB 4 East London schools were closed on 3.10.18 to be fumigated due to an outbreak of noble False widow spiders (Steatoda nobilis), the most poisonous spider in the UK, which likely first came to the UK in cargo ships from the Canary Islands around 150 years ago. There are 5 further false widow species in the UK, including the Cupboard spider in this image, whose bite can also be painful to humans, though the risk from any of these spiders is small as they are shy and would only bite if provoked.
