DNA and MECP2 complex. Molecular model of MECP2 (methyl CpG binding protein 2 (Rett syndrome)) bound to the BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) gene on a strand of methylated DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid, red and blue). MECP2 is a protein that is essential for the normal function of nerve cells (neurons), and a transcriptional repressor that mediates gene silencing.
