April 18, 2019 - Creston, Iowa, United States - New York Community members listen as Democratic Senator Kirsten Gillibrand campaigns for President of the United States during a ''listening tour'' stop at at the Adams Street Espresso & Soda Shoppe in Creston, Iowa. .More than a dozen Democratic party candidates are campaigning in the state of Iowa to win the Iowa Democratic Caucuses February 3, 2020. The Iowa Caucuses is part of a series of primary elections in the United States that will help the Democratic party decide the candidate that will be the opponent of United States President, and defacto leader of the Republican party, Donald J. Trump. The United States has two dominant political parties that compete for power although there are more than two parties. The party that wins the presidential election has enormous power in the United States' representative democracy system of governance. A United States president can serve for a total of 8 years, but must be reelected after 4 years. Other early important primary elections are in South Carolina and New Hampshire, and candidates are campaigning now in those states as well. Running for President of the United States costs millions of dollars and a candidates political skills are just as important as their fundraising skills, or access to money.
