Commanche tribe: Lake Winnipeg. Initiation ceremony for young Commanche aspiring to bcome Shamen or witch doctors. Part of the ceremony included suspension by hooks passed through the flesh. This would have been preceeded by increasingly frenetic activity such as dancing and drumming, which would induce a state of self hypnosis. From Le Voleur, Paris, 12 November 1880.
