On the 8th August Myanmar commemorated the 34th anniversary of the '8888 Uprising', also known as the People Power Uprising, which peaked on 08 August 1988, was a series of nationwide demonstrations, marches and protests that began as a student movement in Yangon before spreading to the rest of the country. The demonstrations were held against the then ruling Burma Socialist Programme Party (BSPP) regime, a one-party state, headed by General Ne Win.
