Cartoon from Punch, 1906, showing Leopold II of Belgium (1835-1909), squeezing his subjects in the Congo Free State (now Democratic Republic of Congo) to death. After exposure of exploitation of local labour, in 1908 Belgium annexed the territory and conditions improved slightly from when it was under Leopold י s personal rule and it was known as the Belgian Congo until independence.
