Captain Thomas Coram (1668-1751) was a philanthropist who created the London Foundling Hospital in Lamb's Conduit Fields, Bloomsbury, London to look after abandoned children - which is said to be the world's first incorporated charity. Hogarth, a personal friend of Coram's, was among the first governors of the Foundling Hospital and through his efforts provided an early venue for contemporary artists in Britain. The success of this venture led to the formation of the Society of Artists
