Canister of chlorine gas. Chlorine is a yellow green gas with a strong odour, composed of two chlorine atoms. It is commonly used as a disinfectant, bleaching agent, and in the production of various chemicals.

Fieldner, is using a chlorine intermittent canister testing machine. This machine tests the effectiveness of gas mask canisters in filtering out chlorine gas. This photograph was received on July 12, 1918, from the Chemical Warfare Service.

The photo was taken by a Chemical Warfare Service Photographer on April 2, 1919, and has a description number of Surect: 55178. The machine was used to test canisters containing chlorine gas and the photograph was featured in notes issued in 1941.
