The greatest number is atOroville, Butte County, where there are six at work, and two morebeing constructed. Most of these are in the Feather River, but oneis working on gravel a mile from the river, where a hole abouttwenty-five feet deep has been dug, and in this the dredger was built THE MINERAL INDUSTRY OF CALIFORNIA 37 or placed, water enough flowing from the ground to float it. Thismachine is at work in the middle of an orchard. Some of thesedredges
