Babbacombe Cliff and Beach are situated in North Devon between Westward Ho! and Bucks Mills. The South West coastal path takes you briefly on to this beach by wooden steps and then returns to the cliff top. The rocks along this coast consist of shales, slates and sandstone laid down over several hundred million years when this area was part of a large ocean basin. Later in their geological history they were subject to intense heat and pressure. This changed their character and also distorted them into faults and folds characteristic of this landscape. These Carboniferous Culm Measures occur south of the river Taw.
