The 'Lancs' first saw service with RAF Bomber Command in 1942 and as the strategic bombing offensive over Europe gathered momentum, it became the main aircraft for the night-time bombing campaigns that followed.

Designed by Roy Chadwick, the Lancaster was a WW2 heavy bomber made by Avro (A.V. Roe and Company), a British manufacturer founded in 1910 in Manchester, Lancashire, England, UK. The prototype of the Lancaster made its maiden flight in January 1941. The aircraft had a seven-made crew, with its average age being only 22 years old.

The bomb load consists of a 4,000-lb HC 'cookie' and mixed 1,000-lb and 500-lb MC bombs. The 'Lancs' first saw service with RAF Bomber Command in 1942 and as the strategic bombing offensive over Europe gathered momentum, it became the main aircraft for the night-time bombing campaigns that followed.

RMG4MRHX–A No.9 Sqd Avro Lancaster I, R5700 WS-N, on the runway at RAF Waddington in early 1942. This aircraft was reported missing during Ops over Hanover on the 23rd September, 1943. The plane had been shot down and had crashed at Bad Munder-am-Deister, 25km SW of Hannover. None of the crew survived. They were buried in the local War Cemetery, which is known as the 'Limmer Friedhof.'

It served in the early stages of the Second World War, bearing the brunt of the early bombing war over Europe, taking part in the first night raid on Berlin and the first 1,000-bomber raid on Cologne. It was retired from RAF Bomber Command service in late 1942, superseded by the larger four-engined heavy bomberslike the Avro Lancaster.

RM2AW49J3–A WAAF instrumental mechanic in the cramped bombadiers dome working on a Lancaster Bomber's automatic pilot. The WAAF (Women's Auxiliary Air Force) was created on 28 June 1939, and women recruited into the WAAF were given basic training. WAAFs did not serve as aircrew, but were active in parachute packing and the crewing of barrage balloons in addition to performing catering, meteorology, radar, aircraft maintenance, transport, communications duties including wireless telephonic and telegraphic operation.
