In fantastic pavilion on outdoor terrace with heavy curtains hung from 2 arches, Emperor sits on cushion at top of flight of steps covered with Oriental rug; behind him, throne sumptuously carved & topped by peacock feathers flanked by attendants, 1 on L holds elephant which is behind throne, the other on R holds flag & shield; 3 men prostrate themselves in foreground near incense burner & additional man raises his hands to imperial couple; woman (=Empress?), attended by servant holding parasol above head, sits in two-wheeled chariot drawn by 2 men bowing to Emperor (L); 2 figures behind backdrop drapery (L) & table bearing ceramic wares & vessels near peacock & basket of fruit in foreground (R); birds perched on arcade & flying, town in distance (L) (BRD) picture-frame border with stylized acanthus leaves Initially, famous commissions of this series took place with, notably, one set ordered by the duc du Maine & another by his brother the comte de Toulouse; subsequent anonymous commissions followed well into the 18th century. This set was probably 1 of these later commissions & Bennett states that the tapestry was woven before 1732.
