Atlas V rocket and Insight Mars lander. Exploded illustration of the stages making up the United Launch Alliance Atlas V configuration used to launch NASA's InSight Mars lander (inside fairing at upper right). The configuration shown here is the Atlas V-401, referring to the size of payload fairing (4 metres in diameter), the number of supplementary booster rockets (0), and the number of engines (1) in the upper stage. The InSight (Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport) lander is designed for studying the interior of Mars. It will investigate the processes that formed and shaped Mars and its findings will improve understanding of the evolution of the inner solar system's rocky planets. InSight was launched on 5 May 2018. It is scheduled to reach Mars in November 2018.
