At a plantation in Dutch Guiana, also known as Surinam. The colony of Surinam was known for particularly brutal treatment of the slaves that worked there. Groups of slaves of all ages, are shown in various states of dress, either standing or sitting by some trees, with the plantation house in the background. Slavery was abolished in 1863, but slaves were only released after a 10 year transition period.
