The works come with both the collections of the Thyssen family and Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza and, mainly, from the museum itself, an exceptional set in the European context that has made the Thyssen Museum in Madrid an essential point of reference for the knowledge of the American art. American art in the Thyssen collection is the result of a research project, developed with the support of the Terra Foundation for American Art, to study and reinterpret these paintings with a new thematic and transversal perspective, through categories such as history, politics, science, the environment or urban life, and considering aspects of gender, ethnicity, social class or language, among others, to facilitate a deeper understanding of the complexities of American art and culture.
