April 24, 2022, Pagani, Campania / Salerno, Italy: Men and women, young and old, seen for the old town dance the ''Tammurriata'' on the day of the feast of Santa Maria Incoronata del Carmine called ''Madonna delle Galline''. The most important feature that surrounds the entire festival is the tammurriata, a frenzied popular music that breaks out on Friday in albis, accompanies the population for the entire day of Sunday and ends at dawn on the following Monday, when the people of the devotees go to lay at the feet of Our Lady the tammorras used during the feast. The tammorra is a frame drum that releases sounds determined by the impact of the palm of the hand and fingers. The rhythm of the tammurriata is also determined by a second instrument, closely in tune with the tammorra. These are the castanets (or castagnette), two pairs of wood, which, fixed to the middle of the two hands, produce a sharp, ringing sound, which accompanies the darkest, deafening, of the tammorra. The tammurriata determines the beginning of the celebrations, accompanies the people in celebration during the entire Sunday and gathers the dancers beyond the festival until it is finally sealed. After the procession of the Virgin, circles are created, where tammurriatori and devotees freely give life to tammurriata. (Credit Image: © Pasquale Senatore/Pacific Press via ZUMA Press Wire)
