Remarks. Clinus dorsalis most closely resembles Clinus navalis. Jackson (1950) placed it in his subgenus Blennophis with Clinus anguillaris and Clinus striatus, but in view of the naked cheeks and the single soft dorsal ray it seems more appro- priate to place it in a separate subgenus. Note on the author of Clinus dorsalis Gilchrist & Thompson (1908), Thompson (1918), Barnard (1927) and Smith (1945, 1949) gave Bleeker (i860) as the author of this species, but this appears to be incorrect. The first record of the species was published by Bleeker (i860), but it was listed as Clinus dorsalis Castelnau although Castelnau's description of the species was published a year later, in 1861.
