An old, metal alarm gun used for deterring poachers. The gun could be loaded with a shotgun cartridge and was fired by a trip wire. The loud bang would frighten the poacher, or poachers, off while alerting the gamekeeper. They could also have been used for deterring thieves. This example has a hook on one end for hanging the device from a tree branch. The gun containing the cartridge would have been raised to the top of the rod just below the hook. When triggered the gun would slide down the rod and the impact on hitting a base plate would cause the cartridge to fire upwards. The gun, its base plate and the rod can be seen in this picture.
