An advertisement for new iPhone 5c smartphones of Apple is seen at an Apple store in Shanghai, China, 20 September 2013. Apple Inc. (AAPL) attracted long lines of consumers at its retail stores for the debut of its latest iPhones, in the companys biggest move this year to stoke new growth. Sales of the iPhone 5s and 5c kicked off in Australia first. After Japan and Australia, the handsets go on sale today (20 September 2013) in China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Germany, France, U.K. and the U.S. It is the first time Apple is rolling out its flagship product for sale in China on the same day as other main markets, as the company seeks to lure new customers in the worlds largest mobile-phone market. How Apple performs in China is particularly important, given the scale of the market there. The retail price of the iPhone 5C in China will be 4, 488 yuan (US$728), while the iPhone 5S will cost 5, 288 yuan. Analysts have questioned whether the price of the iPhone 5c -- more than the equivalent of $700 because of tariffs -- will be too expensive for customers in China. Partly because of that, Apple shares have fallen 6 percent since the company announced the iPhone pricing last week. In addition to the new handsets, Apple also introduced a new mobile operating system, iOS 7, to customers Sept. 18. It includes a redesign of applications like e-mail, calendar and photos, and adds new icons, fonts and color scheme.
