St Valery Day commemoration: piper Neil Swan of Haddington Pipe Band, whose family members have served in Scottish regiments, plays a lament in the early morning to mark the 81st anniversary of a disastrous day for the 51st Highland Division in the French coastal town of St Valéry-en-Caux where more than 10, 000 men were killed or captured after the Dunkirk evacuation in World War II. They were placed under French command by Churchill and ordered to recapture the Abbeville bridgehead on the Somme. Due to being surrounded by German Panzer units and foggy weather, a rescue flotilla was unable to enter the port. The battle was largely forgotten until last year with few aware that not all the British Expeditionary Forces escaped from France in June 1940
