A late 19th Century illustration of Socrates (470–399 BC), a Greek philosopher from Athens who is credited as a founder of Western philosophy and the first moral philosopher of the ethical tradition of thought with friends before his trial in 399 BC. He went on trial for corrupting the minds of the youth of Athens, worshipping false gods and not worshipping the state religion. He was found guilty by a majority vote cast by a jury of hundreds of male Athenian citizens and sentenced to death.
