A kite-balloon in use for observation purposes during a coast bombardment. The balloon is towed by a vessel which is specially adapted for carrying it (inflated) on deck. A merchant ship, with the foremast removed and screens arranged for protection from heavy winds, is usually employed. The observer, whose duty is to note the effect of the gunfire on the enemy's position, is in a basket slung below the balloon, and is in telephone communication with the mother-ship, which repeats the messages to the bombarding warships.
