The west branch which we went up, is about thirty yards wide, and tho south, which we passed, about fifteen yards. Three hunters vent by land to-day, and at noon had killed two deer and a goat or cabre. The riv^r is very crooked in this valley. The hunters again went out in the afternoon and killed two deer more. There are no buf- faloe in this part of the country, und other game is not plenty. We went this day nine- teen miles. We found out the reason why Captain Clarke (lid not get the note left at the point, which was that a beaver had cut down and Jragged off the pole, on which I had axed jt. Friday 9th.âWe set out at sunrise, and had a fine morning with some dew ; proceeded on till nine o'cIock, when we halted fc breakfast. Here onr of the hunters came to us who had been out since the morning* the canoes went up the north branch by m , take, and who had that morning preceded them by land. Here also Cuntain Lewis and three men started to go on a-head ; and at ten we proceeded on with the canoes. The river is na.row and very. â f.
