A buff weka, an endangered species in New Zealand, on the island of Mou Waho on Lake wanaka, Otago, New Zealand. The island has been part of a conservation project to re-establish native species. The first and continuing task was to eliminate all predatory non-native species such a ferrets, possums, rats and weasels. the buff weka, being flighless and a ground nester was especially vulnerable to attack. Wanaka Eco Tours have worked closely with DOC in conservation work and encouraging responsible tourism to the island.
