On 7th and 8th of September 1993 there was intensive fighting when the HVO (Bosnian Croat army) ejected the ARBiH (Bosnian Muslim army) and any of the remaining population from Grbavica. It was established after the war that they subsequently went on to systematically destroy all the houses and properties to prevent any Muslims from returning. In the background is the Crkva Gospe Žalosne (Our Lady of Sorrows) church, a Croat church, high on the hill of Mali Mosunj. The Croat–Bosniak War was a conflict between the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the self-proclaimed Croatian Republic of Herzeg-Bosnia, supported by Croatia, that lasted from 18 October 1992 to 23 February 1994.
