Iraqi forces distributed their aircraft away from the air base, along the highway and close to the Great Ziggurat of Ur. The Ziggurat was officially off the target list for coalition aircraft and artillery and the Iraqis figured the jets would not be targeted, but American Special Forces on the ground came along one night and blew them all up. The base today is known as the Imam Ali Air Base. After Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in August 1990, coalition forces were quick to send their armies to both defend Saudi Arabia and to successfully oust the Iraqi forces by the end of February 1991.
