Two days earlier, the ZD893/AG developed problems with its control column immediately after take-off and was deliberately ditched in the desert. After ejecting, Wing Commander Mike Heath and Squadron Leader Peter Battson survived with minor injuries. After Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in August 1990, coalition forces were quick to send their armies to both defend Saudi Arabia and to successfully oust the Iraqi forces by the end of February 1991.
