1960s, exterior view of a newly built "modern" school building, with the architectural style of the day, large window panels and pre-cast concrete, England, UK. Made offsite, the extensive window panels had the benefit of bringing greater light into the classrooms and were cheaper to build as they were mass produced. Together with the use of concrete they reduced the need for brickworks and skilled labour, thus reducing costs. The problem with these modern buildings were that they did not weather well and overtime required lots of maintenance and repairs, and so were subsquently pulled down.
