1950s, historical, exterior of the stewartby brickworks at the London Brick Company (LBC) Bedford, England, showing the extensive number of chimneys at the works, in this era, the largest in the world. At this time Stewartby had 32 chimneys each standing 70 metres tall and were imposing industrial landmarks on a mainly surrounding rural landscape. LBC were paternal employers in the mold of the late Victorian quaker companies and built a 'model village' at Stewartby, providing their employees brick-built housing and extensive social and leisure facilities.
