The business specialised in women's and children's footwear. Historically Leicestershire was an important area of Britain for shoe manufacture and in 1872 the Co-operative Wholesale Society began making shoes there. Invented by Isaac Singer in the 1820s, originally for stitching cloth, he produced a version in the 1840s that was strong enough for leather.
