China: A hand-drawn map of the 'British Settlement of Shanghae, 1854'. This map, which was drawn in the mid-1930s, shows the outline of the British Settlement (which would become the heart of the International Settlement) in relation to the Chinese City (Nanshi), the Huangpu River and Suzhou Creek, in 1854. International attention to Shanghai grew in the 19th century due to its economic and trade potential near the mouth of the Yangtze River. An old engraving of Dunkirk, Nord, France in the 1600s showing the major port facilities and fortifications built that century. In 1658 it was controlled by Franco-English forces following the battle of the Dunes. King Charles II of England sold it to France in 1662. The town was developed into a fortified port. The town's defences were adapted to create ten bastions and a basin that could hold up to thirty warships. A channel dug to the sea secured by two jetties. The jetties were defended by 5 forts. The defences and the port facilities were demolished in 1713 under the Treaty of Utrecht.
