Sep. 11, 1969 - Belgium's champion cyclist Eddy Merckx had the first big wreck of his career while training at the velodrome but an unforturnate fall threw him to the ground where he stayed, stunned, next to his battered bicycle. His coach, Fernand Wambst, was found dead, while Merckx was knocked unconscious. Merckx withdrew from the Tour de France after his coach's death. This is how Merckx was found after his fall, his face covered in blood.
