The Roadends Community Sculpture Project encouraged communities to celebrate their identities by commissioning artists to produce works set in the landscape. The Listening Place by Valerie Pragnell (built by Archie Walker) was created in December 2000 on the site of the old village school at North Glendale in South Uist. It is intended to illustrate the history of storytelling and bards together with the agricultural nature of the area. Verses from two poems by Donald MacDonald and Donald J MacDonald are inscribed on the stones and replica tractor seats are provided so that people can sit and consider the poetry.
