John James and Mary Ann Sainsbury, who founded Sainsbury's in 1869. this photograph was taken on the wedding day of their eldest son, John Benjamin in 1896, by which time they were already prosperous. However their first shop, at 173 Drury Lane Holborn, was one of London's poorest districts and the Sainsbury family shared the cramped accommodation with three other families.Lord Sainsbury today (Wednesday) brought to an end a 129-year-old tradition when he announced his intention to retire from the helm of the company founded in 1869 by his ancestor John Sainsbury.
